Letters in the Mail

I just discovered The Rumpus which is sort of a literary/culture website that’s slightly intimidating and hipster-ish, but that I have been lost in for about an hour. The coolest part: Letters in the Mail.
“Almost every week you’ll receive a letter, in the mail. Letter writers will include Dave Eggers, Tao Lin, Stephen Elliott, Janet Fitch, Nick Flynn, Margaret Cho, Cheryl Strayed, Marc Maron, Elissa Schappel, Wendy MacNaughton, Emily Gould, and Jonathan Ames. Think of it as the letters you used to get from your creative friends, before this whole internet/email thing.”

And it’s $5 a month, which is pretty dang cheap for a letter every week. I like going back to letters. We’ll see what these people have to say when I receive week one.

Rachel, I’m interested to know your response to your Letters when they arrive. My hipster quotient is sub-zero. The notion of it appeals and aligns with my current determination to help keep the USPS alive by sending snail mail – and when I can manage it, mail art. As has been said, “Letters mingle souls.” xo

I’ll let you know! I haven’t received one yet, but maybe this week. I’m curious about them. I don’t want the post office to die either and I love the idea of letters. I wish I wrote more – small notes instead of text messages. It’s changed our culture – we want everything now. We are addicted and ravenous.
